The day you were born…

Every year, Lauren loves to hear the story of the day she was born.  (but you have to know the background of the story, too)  It’s become a little tradition around here.  So you get to hear it this year, too…I’ll try to make it as short as possible!

My hubby is in the Army.  His new duty station was to be 900 miles away and I was 9 months pregnant.  The doc had been an Army doc and, with my pressuring him, let me be induced 3 weeks early so that I could have the baby with him before we moved.  That crazy weekend went a little like this…

G (hubby) had already reported to the new duty station a few weeks before and picked us an on-post house.

Thursday 12.19…go in to be induced the night before, packers at my house, FIL overseeing, G flies home to be with me, my son (20 months) is with one of my best friends

Friday 12.20…movers load our belongings into the moving truck and, with some coaxing, little L is born about dinnertime without complications

Saturday 12.21…lots of visitors in the hospital, little L is smaller than anticipated (5 pounds, 12 ounces) G goes out to find some preemie clothes!

Sunday 12.22…discharged from hospital, say goodbye to my best friends in the world, drive by the house to make sure it’s empty, head from Dallas towards Little Rock, stop every few hours to feed, stop for dinner at a Pizza Hut in Arkansas…young waitress comments on how little L is and asks how old she is…my reply, 40 hours old!, stop for the night, thank goodness my son is so good in the car!

Monday 12.23…arrive at new house about 7 pm that night, in the snow, to an empty house.  G had very sweetly put a wreath on the door and we had a 2 foot Christmas tree inside with gifts under it.  We have a little Christmas…and our belongings would arrive a mere 7 days later!

Needless to say, six years later, she still has spunk.

We celebrated her birthday on Thursday at school.  I made the traditional school cupcakes we take every year.  These started when Gordy (son) was in Kinder at a school that did not allow sweets…treats had to be healthy.  So I made cinnamon muffins and used a dipped pretzel to make a ‘candle’.  I added a little yellow icing ‘flame’ and every child gets a candle!  No such rule in our new school, so this year’s cakes are chocolate!  I did spare the icing, though…

For today’s festivities…just a little family gathering.  Lauren and I made these cute little chocolate cake boxes and filled them with goodies for little favors.

I’m pretty pleased with how they turned out.  I had seen a similar project in a Scrapbook Trends mag and decided to make my own digital version.  The project prints on a sheet of regular sized printer paper…just cut, fold, and glue.   Not too much of a child centered activity…but cute, nonetheless!  You can pick it up here.
